Equine therapy provides humans with direct, regular contact with horses to help those humans grow and develop, and to instill within them healthier ways of thinking. It is believed that equine therapy techniques can provide physical, emotional, and mental rewards to those who participate in it. Children and adults who suffer from mental or emotional challenges tend to benefit the most from equine therapy.

Some of the emotional and psychological benefits that can be gained from equine therapy are:

• Decreased hostility
• Reduced feelings of anger
• Lowered stress levels
• Increased trust
• Improved self-esteem
• A greater sense of patience

During the course of equine therapy sessions, patients are allowed to interact with a horse of their choice under the guidance of a licensed therapist. In most cases, equine therapy sessions are conducted in group settings, and tend to last for several weeks. There are some facilities, however, that offer private sessions for patients who would prefer that type of treatment.

Horses are extremely sensitive to the feelings and emotions of humans. When a horse is paired with a troubled person, a bond gradually develops between them. This methodology works in part because horses will take whatever emotions or feelings that they are receiving from a human and reflect them back to the person. Once a connection has been established between animal and human, it becomes a fairly smooth process to guide the patient and promote positive change within that individual.

Equine therapy is thought to be particularly successful in dealing with adolescents who have traditionally not responded well to other types of treatment. During this type of therapy, patients participate in activities with their horses and then they discuss their feelings or behaviors as they are happening. Non-verbal communication is a very important part of equine therapy, as are problem solving, creative thinking, responsibility, teamwork, confidence, and attitude. All of these skills can be learned through equine therapy under the guidance of a trained professional.

Equine therapy is commonly used to treat the following types of issues:

• Eating disorders
• Attention deficit disorder
• Substance abuse
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Behavioral problems

For the most part, equine therapy is considered to be a short-term treatment. It does not generally last for several months or years, which is an aspect many patients find appealing.
