John Mayer’s Addiction to Twitter Reportedly Caused Breakup with Jennifer Aniston
According to Star magazine, sources close to actress Jennifer Aniston say that her former boyfriend John Mayer was addicted to Twitter, ignoring Aniston’s phone calls and emails in favor of spending hours on the social media site.
Sources say Mayer told Aniston he was busy with work, but then Aniston found “hundreds of Tweets” from his page. When Aniston confronted Mayer about the lies, Mayer simply acknowledged his lies and told Aniston he was sorry it didn’t work out, showing no remorse.
Mayer has defended his Twitter addiction before, telling E! Online in March that he didn’t have an obsession with the online micro-blogging site.
"It’s inherently silly and it’s inherently dumb," he said in March, also claiming that Twitter is not a "path to spiritual enlightenment.” He also wrote on his page that "it’s one step away from sending pictures of your poop."
This is not the first time Twitter has come between celebrity relationships. Pop singer and actress Miley Cyrus says she was forced to ditch Twitter because her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth didn’t approve.
The Center for Online and Internet Addiction says Internet addiction affects 1 in 8 Americans.
"Some people are preoccupied with using the Internet, are unable to control their use, and are jeopardizing employment and relationships," the site says. "The concept of ‘Internet addiction’ has been proposed as an explanation for this uncontrollable, damaging use of this technology."
