It's worth noting that the use of these products are very very widespread among the populace, and the proportion of reported negative incidents of JWH-*** to number of active users is dwarfed when compared to the proportion of accidents & deaths related to (Legal) alcohol and tobacco.

Further, these incidents involved factors e.g. massive overdose, improper setting and influence, possibly led on by typical young male bravado and ignorance. Synthetic Cannabinoids are very powerful and people should be educated on proper use.

Dear Josh,

How wonderful it is to read about your success with this demon, called addiction, that we share. I am a grateful recoverying alcoholic, in my 4th year of recovery! I was first called an "alcoholic" back in 2001 when I entered my first detox, denying all the way I had a problem, until the blessed day came, January 16, 2008, when God entered my life and relieved me of my obsession and craving for a drink for the first time since I was 10 years old. I got sober just shy of my 51st birthday and have been left with some physical issues, some quite serious. However, being sober means I'm under the protection and care of God and therefore, I can handle all situations that come my way, a day at a time. Thank you for being outspoken about your own story and for your honesty, which has helped me tremendously. After the death of my first husband from leukemia many years ago, I remarried a man in the program who I know God sent to me. We totally understand each other in every way and I do feel totally blessed. It wasn't that long ago that I couldn't imagine my life without alcohol, and today, I can't imagine life with it. Thank God for AA and the 12 steps, and people like you who share your life with us all. It all has saved my life and continues to do so on a daily basis. Oh, I am a Texas Rangers fan (because of you and your incredible ability in baseball), and that says alot coming from Red Sox country!! Can't wait for our upcoming games shortly!!! Please respond back and let me know your sobriety date, if you will. In the meantime, remember "Sober's Better" and keep up your wonderful professional record.

Very sincerely,
Lindsey D

Hey Millie,
Great article - will never tired of hearing about people sick of bad decisions and ready to see some change.
We're in the middle of a big promotion to win a grant and keep moving forward - anything you can do to help us spread the word, including voting yourself every day, is going to make a big difference.

Thanks

I would imagine she's not the only mom struggling with this. Parents have to set rules early on (like don't let them have a TV in their bedroom) or anyone with a propensity to isolate and become obsessive will have ample opportunity.

I totally agree that as long as there is no focus on treatment that the problem will continue to go on unabated. When an alcoholic drinks the last thing they think about is whether or not they should drive. If they tell themselves, I'll only have one drink, they don't even have control over that - I still believe serious consequences are important (that's the wake up call), but if the state required REAL treatment (not a few AA meetings and some outpatient therapy) some of these people might finally figure out that they have a problem that isn't going to go away.

It's very inspiring to see this girl has turned her life around and is now doing penance in a way that might stop other people from driving drunk. Can a person ever really feel whole again after killing their best friend? Another great cautionary tale - I'm glad she has the moral fiber to face what happened and try to teach others about the horrific consequences that drunk driving can bring about.

The Basketball Diaries is a powerful story that really shows how drugs can turn a person's life into a nightmare. I think it's an amazing cautionary tale that everyone starting to dabble in using drugs should watch - don't think it can't happen to you!
