Addiction is not a modern disease. It has existed for centuries - once humans learned how to crush and ferment grapes or chew certain leaves, there were surely those who overindulged. Throughout history societies have tried many things to control substance abuse and addiction. Religions have forbidden alcohol, as have governments (Prohibition). Societies create laws to control mood-altering substances: some are made illegal, others only legal through a legitimate medical prescription. Debate over how to help those with addiction continues to this day.
