California’s top law official reported Tuesday that former child actor Corey Haim had prescriptions for as many as 553 dangerous drugs in the last year of his life, which was the result of "doctor shopping," or visiting numerous doctors to fraudulently obtain prescription drugs. This issue has been raised in numerous celebrity deaths, including Anna Nicole Smith, Michael Jackson, and Health Ledger. Madison Park of CNN writs that doctors say they often rely on their own instant judgments in the office and have little reliable means of double-checking the patients’ information.

Rapper DMX was sentenced to six months in an Arizona jail on Tuesday for violating his probation by testing positive for cocaine. The rapper (born Earl Simmons), who has been in jail since his arrest on March 9 for five counts of probation violation, admitted to a single violation for failing a court-mandated drug test last June and testing positive for cocaine, according to The Arizona Republic.

Corey Haim’s death is linked to an "illegal and massive prescription-drug ring," California Attorney General Jerry Brown said Friday. Alan Duke of CNN.com reports that Brown’s office is investigating "an unauthorized prescription under the former child star’s name that was found during an ongoing investigation of fraudulent prescription-drug pads ordered from a vendor in San Diego."

Leif Garrett Arrested on Heroin Charge
Former teen idol Leif Garrett posted a $10,000 bond Wednesday after spending two days in a jail on a drug charge, a Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokesman said.
Garrett, 48, was arrested Monday at a downtown Los Angeles train station after police found heroin in his shoe, spokesman Steve Whitmore said. Garrett was 16 when he scored his first pop chart hit, “Surfin’ USA,” in 1977.
When deputies approached Garrett Monday morning at the Metrolink station, he was “acting in a pronounced way, shaking and sweating,” Whitmore said. Garrett told them he was “nervous around law enforcement because of other meetings with them in the past,” he said.
The singer did jail time four years ago after he was arrested with heroin while he stood on a subway platform at another Los Angeles transit station.
