Date rape drugs are drugs that are often used without the person’s knowledge in order to gain control over them to commit a sexual assault. Rohypnol, also known as Ruffies, is the most well-known drug used for this type of crime. Women are advised never to take a drink from someone they do not know, monitor their own drink at all times, and to go to a hospital for testing if they suspect they have been drugged.
The naturally occurring brain chemical 4-hydroxybutyrate (4-HB), also called gamma hydroxybutyrate or GHB, can be abused or used as a date-rape drug when taken by mouth. A team of Ohio and Michigan scientists have determined new routes by which 4-HB is metabolized by the body.
